About Me

I have been a Reading Consultant at The Peck Place School for many years. I am involved in all aspects of literacy- teaching, consulting and mentoring. At Peck Place, I also serve as a consultant to Special Education. As a Reading Consultant, I have many responsibilities. To me, the most important is providing direct, explicit instruction to children who are experiencing difficulty learning to read. A second responsibility is curriculum development. I am co-author of Developing Dynamic Writers, Orange’s writing curriculum and co-author of PAL, a phonemic awareness program. I have been actively involved with all teachers in developing core curriculum in English Language Arts. At Peck Place, we have created many documents that enhance our literacy program: DRA2: What’s behind the number?; Introducing and Reinforcing Comprehension Objectives in First and Second Grade; The First Bite of a Good Piece of Cake: A Smart Board Lesson and others. Recently, I helped launch our English Language Arts Initiative in our district. It is a reading workshop model utilizing the Journeys materials as a resource. The program is comprehensive and balanced. Committee participation is another aspect of my position. On the State level, I am a member of numerous English Language Arts committees. I have served on the Governor’s Reading Council and Reading First initiative. I have designed sample lessons for the Connecticut State Department of Education’s website to implement the standards of the Common Core in literacy for Kindergarten and First Grade levels. I am a member of the Connecticut Education Association (CEA) committee for Instruction and Professional Development. Locally, I am an active member of the Language Arts Council. I am involved in Orange’s Professional Development committee and the Curriculum Council. I am a presenter on the local, state and national levels. “Reading is a basic life skill. It is a corner stone for a child’s success in school and, indeed, throughout life. Without the ability to read well, opportunities for personal fulfillment and job success inevitably will be lost.” – Jeanne Chall
